NBC San Diego News Story

Hello all,

I was just contacted by Peggy Pico, a reporter working for NBC News San Diego. She is interested in speaking with people who have been treated for tattoo removal, hair removal, or other such "non-surgical" laser procedures in a MediSpa environment. She is writing a story of procedures "gone bad" in such an environment. The ideal patient would be local to Southern California and willing to speak about this with her. Please contact me via this post or via my contacts page if you are interested. [Update 10/3- Please note that this story is filled. No more replies are needed. - Thanks. JPD]

Maybe Laser Surgery shouldn't be done in a Salon?

CNN Video

This woman had hypertrophic scarring when the laser treatment was obviously set too high. Maybe pay a little more and have a doctor do it?

Liposuction Death by Family Doctor

CTV.Ca

"There are reports that the family doctor who performed the operation had training in cosmetic surgery but was not a licensed plastic surgeon, said CTV Toronto."

Watch someone defend this guy like the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. There are some people who just aren't qualified to perform cosmetic surgery. The stakes are high so be careful.

Donatella Versace's Skin & Aging

Pic and Story

"No matter how blonde your hair or trim your figure, time eventually has its way."

This is more like cigarettes and sun exposure, the two worst things you can do to your skin. The story posits that too much cosmetic surgery may be involved here. In this case, the cigarettes and the sun are more than half the problem. I'd wager she has had good plastic surgeons involved in her care, but they cannot defeat the signs of aging nearly as well when the cancer sticks and the sun are still in play.

Demi Moore - $600,000 on Plastic Surgery?!

ABC Chicago

Demi Moore reports having some "$600,000 worth of plastic surgery. That includes breast implants, collagen injections, liposuction and a $12,000 procedure to lift sagging skin around her knees."

She pays much more than the average patient at Beverly Hills prices, but it is still pretty amazing.

Amy Winehouse And Her Paronychia

Pic Source

Amy Winehouse like many celebs gets photographed a lot. It is rare on a photograph that we see a probable hand infection. Here she may have a paronychia, an infection along the border between the nail and the skin at the side or the base of a finger or toenail.

These things usually hurt and may need to be drained.

BTW - Plastic surgery can include hand surgery.

Britney Spears, The VMAs and Plastic Surgery

Pic Source

A year or so ago the buzz on the blogs was whether or not Britney Spears had had a Tummy Tuck at the time of her second delivery. After a review of the VMAs, I'd say probably not.

Seeing the VMA clips, it is apparent that Ms Spears did not take her physical condition or appearance into account. Plastic surgery alone would not solve her problem. The whole account does help explain why celebrities are so frequently tempted by cosmetic surgery however. In her case an aggressive tummy tuck could offer flattening of her tummy and deflation of her flanks. It would not make her immune to the effects of too much partying and not enough gym time. These can tarnish the best of surgical outcomes. It also can affect a performance.

China bans plastic surgery television

Breitbart.com

China's broadcasting watchdog has banned television programs about plastic surgery or sex change operations, branding them as "vulgar," state media reported Friday.

China has a broadcasting watchdog. We in the US have very little regulation in that regard. A happy medium might be good.

Demi Moore - Good Plastic Surgery Plus...

Pic Source

A post on ICYDK.com today asks the age old question (or so it seems) of whether or not Demi Moore is more natural than plastic.

Who cares?

People are not diminished by good plastic surgery. Demi has had some good plastic surgery. She also happens to have some very nice "God-given" features.

Jennifer Ellison - Big Implants in a Bikini - A Lesson for Pre-oppers

Pic Source

Sizing for pre-op breast implant patients can be difficult to figure. What one woman may find desirable another may find horrible.

Case and point: Jennifer Ellison. These are likely large high profile implants. Breasts that stand straight up in a bikini when the woman is lying on her back are likely implanted with large and/or high profile breast implants.

Large implants can be more troublesome over the long term even if you like the appearance. Just consider the whole picture before you sign up for surgery.

Chicago Tribune Labiaplasty Piece

Chicago Tribune

This article warns against cosmetic genital surgery, but then reaffirms that "only labiaplasty, which involves trimming and reshaping part of the external genitalia, is well documented in the scientific literature."

Looking at the source of this article (a committee paper from the American College Of Obstetricians and Gynecologists,) the warning is specifically targeted at vaginal procedures and those that promise increased sexual gratification.

As for my practice, labiaplasty is all that I offer. The biggest problem that I have seen is a lack of understanding amongst incoming patients of what exactly they can have done safely. General recommendations I would offer based upon my experience in doing these procedures is:

(1) Stay external. Avoid procedures that operate the vagina. The external structures (the Labia - vaginal lips) themselves can be operated using certain techniques with low risk profiles.

(2) Expect only physical changes. Even suggesting that your procedure will enhance sexual gratification is not honest.
