Kevin Costner says No Plastic Surgery

Carefair.com

Fifty-one year old actor Kevin Costner said plastic surgery is not on his agenda, at least not for cosmetic purposes. The star of movies such as Dances With Wolves, For the Love of the Game and The Bodyguard said he will never use plastic surgery procedures to halt the hand on time on his body or to look like he did in his younger days.

We will see.

US FDA Releases Silicone Gel Breast Implant Ban

MSNBC

Although most of my colleagues are rejoicing, I receive the news of the lift of the silicone gel breast implant ban equivocally.

The real question is what defines "safe."

Silicone gel implants do cause more problems than their saline-filled counterparts. They are certainly more prone to encapsulation (breast hardening) and many more patients with gel implants need additional surgery (at least in my experience) relative to patients with their saline-filled counterparts. Perhaps the FDA figures that the information is out and women can make their decision based upon that evidence. I will still use silicone gel implants only after a discussion of the risks involved and will use the specialty consents required by the FDA.

A follow-up question is reasonable here:

The gel implants still require registration and this consent whereas the saline-filled versions do not. If the FDA felt that silicone gel implants were so safe, why is there a difference?

This will remain confusing.

Chinese Plastic Surgery Scandal

Telegraph UK

This one is interesting on several levels:

(1) The Former Head of the Bank of China in Hong Kong has been accused of spending almost £300,000 on plastic surgery for his mistress, in the latest of a series of sex scandals exposed in the state-run media.

(2) His trial last year, where he received a suspended death sentence, was not held in public, but a specialist legal paper claims to have been leaked court documents.

(3) He was only convicted on non-violent crimes mainly accepting bribes from that which I can determine.

(4) To make his mistress "perfect," he sent her to cosmetic surgery clinics in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Britain, armed with a photograph of Chen Chen, his old girlfriend from school.

We in America do not have the market cornered on scandal (or much else) anymore it seems.

Diane Lane Is Terrified of Plastic Surgery

StarPulse

A funny press release, this one includes:

The 41-year-old says, "It scares the s**t out of me. And I don't relish the thought of people staring at me, trying to figure out what I've had done."

and

She adds, "I reserve the right to change my mind. Absolutely. I'm a female, that comes first."

Maybe the woman needs to educate herself and figure out her position. It doesn't sound like she knows.

12 Year Old & Liposuction - No

ABC News

Why not perform liposuction on this 12 year old:

(1) Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure.
(2) Liposuction is a cosmetic operation and she is way below the age of consent.
(3) The message is wrong. "No Diet. No Exercise. Just have surgery?"
(4) It will probably not be effective long term.
(5) Large volume liposuction is more risky than the smaller contouring form.

Plastic surgeons come to the table with their own philosophies. Mine is obviously different than that of her surgeon.

Kirstie Alley: Plastic Surgery?

People

"Her transformation, accomplished over two years with diet and exercise, "is inspiring," says actress pal Kathy Najimy. "She's a role model for women everywhere."

I think she has likely had some surgery...not for the weight loss but for the contouring. After losing that amount of weight her tummy should have looked like one of my pre-ops for extended abdominoplasty or lower body lift surgery. She is holding herself at the places at which an extended tummy tuck scar would end. Coincidence maybe?

BEAUTY JUNKIES: Book Review

Miami Herald

Why is it that only extremes make it today? This book review features lines like:

"One must suffer to be beautiful."

and stories of the author Alex Kuczynski and her encounter with Restylane:

"In 2004, in quest of that Angelina Jolie suck-the-chrome-off-a-trailer-hitch moue, she had her upper lip stuffed with Restylane, a mucus-like synthetic form of hyaluronic acid. It gave her a yam-sized Donald Duck disaster zone below her nose that kept her housebound for several days."

as well as statements making plastic surgeons the demons:

"Second, many surgeons and dermatologists actually prefer big-bucks, high-satisfaction cosmetic work to, say, cancer surgery."

Well Alex, I do both and cancer surgery frequently loses me money. Are you familiar with the concept of profit and loss?

Again we sensationalize plastic surgery and surgeons making them villains ignoring the sobering reality of moderation that virtually removes the potential for disaster.

You can have good results with plastic surgery despite the tone of this Miami Herald book review. I am not going to read the book. From the looks of this it likely reads like a Batman comic book.

Gore out of Plastic Surgery Market

Business Wire.com

Gore (of Goretex fame) is getting out of the "thread lift" business. I have opined before that I think thread lifts are risky. Now a maker of the threads seems to think it is "all liability - no reward" or so it seems.

Cameron Diaz Cosmetic Rhinoplasty?

Gabsmash

Cameron has decided to get her nose repaired. She told W Magazine, "I'm getting it fixed. I can't take it. I cannot breathe at all." Diaz broke her nose for the fourth time while surfing a few years ago.

So we all know that the internal rhinoplasty that repairs breathing problems doesn't change the nose's external appearance. Who thinks she might be getting a little cosmetic work done at the same time?

Britney Spears Divorce and....

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Years ago a patient of mine asked if I thought Britney Spears had had a breast augmentation. Now my Blogger friend Elisa in a comment about Britney's possible divorce kinda asks the same question. Breasts do not usually act like those in this picture without implants inside them. Maybe she is post-op.

Anybody got any old pictures of Britney?

BTW - I hope you are dumping KFed, Britney. By all accounts, he seems to be a leech.

Joan Collins Denies Plastic Surgery

Breaking News

Joan Collins denies she has had plastic surgery. She says her looks are the result of proper lipstick application. Is she just saying her lips are untouched?

Yeah, right.

Cindy Margolis, Playboy and Plastic Surgery

Pics at Drunken Stepfather Blog

I work too much. I had no idea Cindy Margolis was over 40. I also had no idea that she had posed for Playboy.

The link has the pictures from another blog. Interesting are the images from Hustler showing how she looked at 18. I wonder who did her plastic surgery. She appears to be a patron of the art. Still she looks damn good for forty one.
