Is All Plastic Surgery Frowned Upon?

Gossip Rocks Forum Post

Just curious. I think it's fun to speculate on who's had what done, shake our heads at those who try to deny the fact that they've obviously been altered, but why is there usually a negative stigma attached to getting it done? If a person chooses to spend their own money to modify their own body to feel better about how they look, what's the harm?

My Reply:

Some people frown upon all unneeded surgery. Cosmetic surgery is the ultimate in unneeded surgery particularly if the outcome seems freakish. This is philosophy on the most basic level. That which one person finds horrible another may find attractive.

In looking at pics of celebrities it can often be hard to tell what changes are due to aging and what might be from surgery. The interface between the two is one of the hardest things to predict. It is entertainment to discuss entertainers and their possible plastic surgery. We rarely know for certain whether anything has been done except when it appears really horrible or really great.

A Different Kind Of Memorial Day

My patients (and some people I've met online via my forum interests) have a curious interest in knowing what exactly is removed in tummy tuck surgery. So as a somewhat perverse kind of memorial for the Memorial Day weekend, I made a simple collage:

This is a patient before surgery with the "slab" of skin and fat removed at surgery and indications on her pre-op image of where it was originally.

They really don't weigh very much...maybe 1-5 pounds.

Jennifer Aniston and her Hair Extensions

Daily Mail UK

Hair extensions led to some lost hair it seems. Quicker is not always better. I have never really been a fan of hair extensions in people with good hair to start. The risk outweighs the benefit. She should probably be OK with time.

Mary Jo Buttafuoco's Plastic Surgery

ET Online

MARY JO BUTTAFUOCO had plastic surgery to help repair the damage done by the famous gunshot injury she incurred at the hands of Amy Fisher. The pictures in the article are not really helpful as the "BEFOREs" are taken in animation and the "AFTERs" in repose.

This kind of surgery is difficult and revisions are common.

Breasts Too Small Lawsuit?

Daily Record Story

Yep. A case in New Jersey claims a plastic surgeon made a patient's breasts too small in breast reduction "like a mastectomy." I do not know many of the details here, but apparently the patient had wound complications. This could be a major contributing factor to a poor aesthetic outcome.

Then again Dr Richard Marfuggi has had two large malpractice settlements in the last year for $195,000 and $350,000. Just check the New Jersey Medical Board's web site physician search.

There is no information as to whether she smoked or not.

Dr Youn Blogs on Dr D?

Dr Tony Youn's Blogs On Nicole Richie's Nose

Well how about this? I inspired someone to write a blog. A plastic surgeon in Michigan is writing a celebrity plastic surgery blog a little like this one. Read his post on Body Dysmorphism.

A little respect is nice.

Thanks for the compliment,

Nicole Richie Shopping a Nosejob

Bricks and Stones

Nicole Richie is apparently shopping a rhinoplasty. At least one surgeon by reports considered her a poor risk and declined her surgery. There is talk about body dysmorphic disorder. She has had serious weight fluctuations.

It wasn't me folks. I don't do rhinoplasty. Unfortunately even if no surgery is the right decision, she will probably find someone to operate if she looks long enough.

Ashlee Simpson Nosejob? - Looks like It to Me.

CityRag Post

It looks like Ashlee Simpson got that nosejob or at least pictures showing it are available. A year or so ago, I posted that it didn't look done (with the images that I had at the time.) She probably had it done at least a few months prior to the "after" image seen at City Rag. Her nose is thinner at the tip and more straight "up and down." It looks pretty nice. I hope she will leave it alone and not keep getting it operated.

Plastic Surgery Death in Aspiring Actress in the UK

Times Online UK

An aspiring 20 year old actress has died due to a complication of surgery to correct her chin. It sounds like she had a large scale operation requiring her anesthesiologist to place a catheter in her heart (probably a Swan-Ganz catheter) to monitor her heart pressures. Apparently this caused damage that resulted in her death in the post-operative period.

This is terrible but extremely uncommon. Only really serious operations require placement of such a catheter. I cannot remember the last time we used one in a cosmetic case. I have been involved however in many cases involving heart catheters and have never seen such a complication. It is still terrible when a patient dies due to any operation especially one that is elective. My heart goes out to her family.
