Plastic Surgery Death in Aspiring Actress in the UK

Times Online UK

An aspiring 20 year old actress has died due to a complication of surgery to correct her chin. It sounds like she had a large scale operation requiring her anesthesiologist to place a catheter in her heart (probably a Swan-Ganz catheter) to monitor her heart pressures. Apparently this caused damage that resulted in her death in the post-operative period.

This is terrible but extremely uncommon. Only really serious operations require placement of such a catheter. I cannot remember the last time we used one in a cosmetic case. I have been involved however in many cases involving heart catheters and have never seen such a complication. It is still terrible when a patient dies due to any operation especially one that is elective. My heart goes out to her family.
